Our mission is to help the most vulnerable children and families in Recife realize their potential. We want to show them that they can change, grow, and add value to their own lives and that of their community. We believe that this change starts here.

Know our activities

Children

From inception, Espaço da Criança-ARH has focused on the children of Recife’s favelas: providing a safe place for them to learn, grow and to just be kids. We teach them that they are valuable and can choose their own path in life.

Youth

An apprenticeship program developed to train teenagers from underprivileged backgrounds. Starting at age 12, they receive the necessary skills to build their professional future. Espaço da Criança-ARH trains them in partnership with local businesses, so that their aims are met.

Families

We give the mothers and women from Recife’s favelas access to free professional development courses; giving them the opportunity to improve their quality of life and that of their families.

Community

Through ongoing events, we provide essential care, services and food to the Coelhos favela, to help build a stronger community.

Our History

Founded under the name Associação para a Restauração do Homem (Association for the Restoration of Mankind - ARH) on December, 6th 1991 by Abigail Mesquita, Espaço da Criança-ARH has already helped two generations and more than 1,000 children in Recife.

In its early years, the institution aimed to serve all those who were marginalized within the local community, but over time realized that to help build a stronger city we first have to invest in its next generation. This renewed focus was translated into the name Espaço da Criança (Kid's Place) and the mission statement: that change starts here, through helping the children of the favela realize their potential.
